About Newcastle Intl. Airport (NCL)
The airport was opened in 1935 and at that time it included a hangar, a clubhouse, workshops, grass runway and fuel garage. In the early 1950 Jim Denyer was named Airport Manager and within a few years more than 5,000 people were using the airport. In the 1960s, due to growing passenger numbers a new runway, an apron and a new air traffic control tower were built. Furthermore, in the 1980s, investment was made in check-in, duty-free shops and catering. In 1991 the Airport Metro station was opened, connecting the city to the airport, and later in 2002 the Tyne and Wear Metro system was opened, linking the airport with the Sunderland city centers. In 2000 a new terminal was inaugurated and in 2004 a Departure Terminal was extended and renovated. 2007 was the year of inauguration of the new Air Traffic Control Tower.
Common-use self-service kiosks in the terminal that allowed passenger to check-in themselves without having to queue at the usual desk were used for the first time in a regional UK airport at Newcastle Intl.
